End of Life: Microsoft to end support for Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008
Just as Windows XP before it, Windows 7 is going the way of the dinosaur, the dodo bird and the DeLorean and becoming extinct.
What’s happening with Windows 7 and when?
All good things must come to an end, including one of the most popular computer operating systems. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7.
What does this mean?
After January 14th, 2020 all Windows 7 computers will stop receiving important antivirus, security and critical updates leaving these computers vulnerable to malicious attacks, hacking and exploits. Running any Windows 7 computers on your network after this time can make your entire network vulnerable.
If you are a Dental or Medical practice, Windows 7 computers will become non-compliant with HIPAA regulations and subject your practice to potential HIPAA violation concerns.
Why are you telling me now?
We at Rocky Mountain Tech Team wanted to give you as much advanced notice as possible. We know a lot of our clients appreciate the heads up for issues that are going to affect their IT budget in about a year from now. We want to make sure you have the time to prepare to upgrade or replace those systems affected by this.
What about my server?
Servers running Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will also reach end of life and end of support on January 14, 2020. This means it will be time to replace any servers running those operating systems with a more modern version. Windows Server 2012 and newer are not affected by this date.
What’s the good news?
Upgrading to Windows 10 offers better performance, security and peace-of-mind. Also, computers are considered capital equipment and qualify for the Section 179 tax deduction which will help cover the expense. More information on section 179 is available at https://www.section179.org/, or from your accountant.
